One More Hill to Hell concerns Dan Grimshaw, who rides for Caine Pomeroy. Pomeroy’s Kingpin Ranch is in the process of ruthless expansion. Melissa Olmstead, an attractive widow, has been holding out against eviction by the Kingpin, and her attractiveness has prompted Pomeroy to treat her more tolerantly than he has other homesteaders. But that tolerance has come to an end. Dan Grimshaw is confronted with a moral dilemma, one that could put him in as much jeopardy as she is. In Against the Law Marshal Mark Kennicott of Cameo Crossing is forced to shoot and kill Billy Ringo in the Trail Queen saloon. Although a coroner’s jury brings in a verdict of self-defense, leading members of the town council who want Cameo Crossing to become a wide-open town demand that Kennicott resign as marshal. But if Kennicott does quit, the entire town will once more be lawless.
